Cure Angular Cheilitis

First off, you should know that angular stomatitis is the exact same thing as angular cheilitis. Below describes the difference in terminology:

Stomatitis - Irritation that occurs around the mouth.
Cheilitis - Irritation that occurs on the lip.
Angular - The corner of your mouth on/around your lip.

So as you can see above, angular stomatitis and angular cheilitis are both ways to describe irritation/redness/cracking on the corner of a person's mouth. Fortunately, you can cure angular stomatitis and angular cheilitis using the same treatments.

Severe Symptoms

  • One or both corners of your mouth being split and having open wounds
  • Minor to moderate pain when opening your mouth or eating

What Causes Angular Stomatitis

Angular stomatitis is not caused by chapped lips or by eating unhealthy (nor is it caused by a vitamin B deficiency, which most people inaccurately think). It is actually a bacterial and fungal infection which is created from the natural bacteria in our mouths.

Under normal conditions our immune system prevents this bacteria from harming us, but whenever we are stressed, ill, or have any type of mouth trauma it weakens our immune system enough that this bacteria can cause an infection in the corner of your mouth.

Why in the corners of my mouth?
There are two main reasons why this happens in the corner of your mouth. The first is that the corners of your mouth is usually where most of your saliva seeps out when eating, talking, etc. The second reason is because the corners of your mouth have many folds and crevices to make it easier for us to smile and open our mouths, which make it ideal places for bacteria.

What causes the redness and why won't it heal?
The redness is caused by your body trying to destroy the bacteria and fungus and is part of your bodies natural healing process. However, since we eat and talk throughout the day, every day, we constantly spread new bacteria from our mouths into our wounded lip corners making it even more difficult for our bodies to fight away the bacteria. This is why it can take anywhere from several weeks to several months for our bodies to heal angular stomatitis on it's own.

How to Cure Angular Stomatitis

Many people think that angular stomatitis can be cured with little effort or on it's own, but the truth is that angular stomatitis can take weeks or months to heal on it's own. There's no reason to wait that long especially since a few simple things you can do at your home can cure it within a day or two.

Not Recommended
Not Doing Anything & Let It Heal Itself - Very rarely will you be able to easily get rid of angular stomatitis on your own. Most of the cases where the angular stomatitis goes away on its own is done completely by accident (such as when people start swimming in the ocean or a salt-water pool which dries out and kills the bacteria and fungus).

Not Recommended
Applying Lip Balm and Neosporin - While this may sound good initially, it will take a very long time of your angular stomatitis to go away. Since angular stomatitis is a bacteria and fungal infection chapstick and Neosporin will only soothe your lips until your body can naturally heal itself...which can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months (depending on the severity of your angular stomatitis).

Recommended, But with Caution
Seeing Your Doctor - Seeing your doctor will definitely get rid of your angular stomatitis, so why is this recommended with caution? The reason this is not highly recommended is because it's unnecessary to go to your doctor for angular stomatitis for the following reasons:

  • Most people will have to pay for both the doctors visit and for the topical cream he will prescribe making it expensive
  • You will have to re-visit the doctor and again, pay for more visits and cream when another outbreak occurs
  • You can risk exposing the sores on your mouth to other bacteria (which may be more harmful) inside the doctors office.
  • Your doctor may decide to refer you to a dermatologist which may tack on another medical bill
If cost is no option, then this may be the best choice for you, but most people cannot pay for both a doctors visit and a topical lip cream which will heal your angular stomatitis when you can cure it yourself at your own home for a fraction of the price.

Using At-Home Angular Stomatitis Remedies - Angular stomatitis has been around for quite a while, and although researchers still don't know with 100% certainty what causes angular stomatitis, there are actually a lot of home remedies that can get rid of and treat angular stomatitis with great success.

Since your mouth replaces its skin cells much faster than the skin cells on other parts of your body, you can actually cure angular stomatitis quite quickly. It's not uncommon for you to see a significant improvement in your angular stomatitis within 24 hours of using these remedies. In fact, most of these home remedies can completely cure your angular stomatitis within 1-3 days of application.

Another benefit of using home remedies to treat angular stomatitis is the cost. Most of the time you will already have the ingredients needed within your home, and if you don't you can normally get them at the local store for around $10.
